Business Skills Are the Real Freelance Superpower

As a freelancer, it’s tempting to think, “If I nail the creative part, everything else will take care of itself.”

But if you’re here, you already know the truth: Business skills are the express route to quality clients and more lucrative freelance opportunities.

It doesn’t matter if you’re currently…

  • stuck in a feast-or-famine cycle

  • struggling with challenging clients

  • doing OK but knowing you need to level up

…the gap between where you are and where you want to be can only be bridged by business skills, not talent alone.

That’s what the Dr. Freelance newsletter is all about.

Getting from Here to There

In my weekly posts, you can expect to see topics such as:

  • Persuasive ways to price and estimate projects

  • Finding and retaining great clients

  • Identifying and avoiding red-flag clients

  • Building a durable referral stream

  • Improving your business processes

  • Incorporating AI into your business

  • Ghostwriting tricks of the trade

  • Current legal and political trends that are jeopardizing independent contracting

Let’s Talk Shop

I’ve been writing, presenting webinars, and speaking at conferences on the business side of freelancing for almost as long as I’ve been freelancing. (1999, if you’re keeping score.)

One of the most rewarding aspects of that has always been interacting with other freelancers, whether in person or virtually. Let’s face it: This can be a solitary enterprise, and none of us knows everything there is to know.

With that thought in mind, I invite you to do 3 things (in addition to subscribing):

  1. If you have a question, either general or about a specific client issue, please email it to me by replying to any of my Dr. Freelance newsletter emails. Many of my post ideas germinate this way, and I’ll obviously keep you anonymous!

  2. If you know a freelancer who might benefit from honing their business skills, please let them know about this site.

  3. If something in a post hits home (or swings and misses), pop into the comments. I read every one.
